John McClain of the Houston Chronicle mentions that Texans GM Rick Smith and VP of football administration Chris Olsen are currently trying to create some extra cap space in an attempt to offer DE Mario Williams a better deal. Houston has already said that Williams remains their top priority but considering their depth on defense, it was assumed that they would be unable to allocate even more money to a position of strength. Williams has said that he would consider offering Houston a discount and mentioned that landing... [Read More]
There is no guarantee that Mario Williams will re-sign with the Texans. Houston is one of the most salary-cap strapped franchises in the NFL and they are dealing with a Pro Bowl-caliber defender at one of the most expensive positions. The Texans also have to worry about the contract of restricted free agent Arian Foster. "Williams is likely to become the highest paid defensive player in league history and a major asset for somebody's pass rush. Unfortunately for the Texans, they probably won't be writing his... If the Houston Texans have plans to franchise restricted free agent running back Arian Foster, then it won't be the worst thing in the world, says Foster's agent Mike McCartney. "The Texans have to do what's right for them, and we'll adjust accordingly. It won't affect us in any way," McCartney told 790-AM in Houston. Most players disdain the thought of the franchise tag being placed on them, but for Foster, who is an undrafted free agent made good, even the top restricted tender of a first-round pick as... Longtime KTRK-TV sports director Bob Allen said on Monday a close friend of the Manning family told him that Peyton Manning would be interested in coming to the Texans if -- as expected -- he is released from the Colts. Needless to say, there would be numerous factors (incumbent QB Matt Schaub's health, for starters) before a Manning-Texans union could become reality. The person who knows the Mannings says Peyton wants to play on a team that has a chance of going to a Super Bowl, and the Texans fit that description.... [Read More]
This could all be moot if the Texans try to wrap up their superstar defender but it would not stun Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly one bit if the Patriots make a play for DE Mario Williams. Bill Belichick is nothing if not opportunistic, and he knows that having one of the finest defensive talents potentially come free like this is a once-a-decade kind of thing he can't afford to pass up. Letting Richard Seymour go was a rare Belichick mistake, and sources have said that the coach admits he hasn't been able to... [Read More]
The Houston Texans have hired former UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell as their quarterbacks coach. He replaces Greg Knapp, who left the Texans to join the Oakland Raiders as offensive coordinator. The Texans' quarterbacks are Matt Schaub, Matt Leinart and T.J. Yates. Dorrell was with the Miami Dolphins for the last four seasons. Dorrell has worked for the Denver Broncos as a wide receivers coach, and now he's reunited with Texans coach Gary Kubiak.
The Houston Texans announced that, on average, ticket prices for the 2012 season will increase by 8.5 percent. Ticket prices for the Texans, who have 101 consecutive sellouts, had remained the same over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The least expensive tickets -- Gridiron Terrace -- will remain at $30. Prices for seats at the "Gridiron" tier will increase by $3 to $5 per seat. The largest increases are for the "Field Level" seats, with the most expensive Prime 1 seats increasing from $120 to $130 while... [Read More]
The Texans are talking with Dolphins QB coach Karl Dorrell about filling the same role, according to the Houston Chronicle. Dorrell, who coached at UCLA from 2003-07, was on the Broncos staff from 2000-02 when Texans head coach Gary Kubiak was Denver's offensive coordinator. The role became vacant when Greg Knapp joined the Raiders to become their offensive coordinator earlier this week.
The Houston Texans are looking at Karl Dorrell for their vacant quarterbacks coach position, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp has left the team to become the Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator. Dorell, 48, has spent the last four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, coaching receivers from 2008-10 before becoming the quarterbacks coach in 2011. The Dolphins lost starting quarterback Chad Henne early in the 2011 season and had to turn to free agent addition Matt Moore in... [Read More]
Now that the Texans' offensive line is beginning to receive the credit it's due, can the club keep it intact for next season? C Chris Myers and ORG Mike Brisiel are both unrestricted free agents whom Houston would like to re-sign, but neither is likely to receive a huge deal because the Texans' main focus is on locking up OLB Mario Williams and RB Arian Foster long term. Behind OLT Duane Brown, Myers was the best performer on the line last season. The Texans love Brisiel's toughness and mean streak; his quick recovery... [Read More]
After Wade Phillips joined the Texans, their defense finally became legit, and for that, he is our 2011 coordinator of the year, he received 15 votes to 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s six and Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano’s four. Pagano was named head coach of the Colts this week. Defense, or lack of it, had been the main thing keeping Houston from becoming a playoff team. In 2010, the Texans gave up at least 30 points in half of their games, they allowed an average of 26.7 points per game, 29th... [Read More]
The Texans top priority will be to re-sign outside linebacker Mario Williams according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, they also want to sign running back Arian Foster, who’ll be a restricted free agent, to a long-term deal. The team’s top priority will be to re-sign outside linebacker Mario Williams. The Texans can’t afford to carry Williams at $22.9 million for one year, they can’t trade him because you can’t trade a player who’s not under contract. They could franchise him and hope he’d agree later to a... [Read More]
Texans center Chris Myers and defensive end Antonio Smith have been added to the AFC Pro Bowl roster, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. Myers replaces Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey, who will miss the game with an ankle injury. Smith replaces New England Patriots defensive end Mark Anderson, who was placed on injured reserve with a thigh injury. Myers has started 80 consecutive games and will be going to his first Pro Bowl. Signed as a free agent in 2009, Smith had a career-high 6.5... [Read More]
The Houston Chronicle reports that Texans RB Arian Foster, who was selected to his second Pro Bowl, won’t play because of an injury to his foot. There was no mention of the injury following Foster's performance against Baltimore in the divisional round of the playoffs when he ran for 132 yards and a touchdown and also caught five passes for 22 yards. The report says the Texans also would like to sign Foster to a long-term deal. If they are unable to, they will tender him at the maximum and would match any offer he... [Read More]
